Alcohol
· Severity: Major
· Notes for Consumers: Do not drink alcohol while taking this medication. Drinking alcohol while taking this medication can cause serious side effects, such as central nervous system (CNS) depression and drowsiness the day after use, and can increase the risk of falling. Call emergency services right away if you experience symptoms of CNS depression: slow or shallow breathing, shortness of breath, feeling faint, dizziness, confusion, trouble staying awake.
· Notes for Professionals: Advise patients not to use zolpidem if they drank alcohol that evening or before bed. An additive adverse effect on psychomotor performance between alcohol and zolpidem has been demonstrated. The risk of next-day psychomotor impairment, including impaired driving, is increased if zolpidem is taken with alcohol.
Zolpidem Tartrate 5mg/1actuation, Oromucosal spray
Caffeine-containing Foods/Beverages
· Severity: Mild
· Notes for Consumers: Caffeine may increase nervousness or sleeplessness. If you are taking Zolpidem to help you sleep, avoid taking caffeine products within several hours of bedtime. In general, you should limit your caffeine intake late in the day to help promote restful sleep. Products containing caffeine include caffeine-containing beverages, dietary supplements, medications or other products.
· Notes for Professionals: Caffeine is a central nervous system (CNS) stimulant. Patients taking medications for sleep, such as zolpidem should avoid caffeine-containing medications, dietary supplements, foods, and beverages within the hours close to bedtime. Patients should be encouraged to avoid excessive total daily caffeine intake, as part of proper sleep hygiene, since caffeine intake can interfere with proper sleep. However, in healthy subjects (without insomnia) in a pharmacokinetic study, coadministration of caffeine at a dosage of 150 to 300 mg with zolpidem did not counteract the sedative effects of a single 10 mg dose of zolpidem.
