AMIODARONE (a MEE oh da rone) prevents and treats a fast or irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia). It works by slowing down overactive electric signals in the heart, which stabilizes your heart rhythm. It belongs to a group of medications called antiarrhythmics.

Caffeine-containing Foods/Beverages
· Severity: Mild
· Notes for Consumers: Side effects from caffeine may get worse if you take amiodarone. Too much caffeine can cause effects like nausea, nervousness, or sleeplessness. You may need to limit your caffeine intake. Common foods and beverages containing caffeine include coffee, teas, colas and chocolate. Many non-prescription drugs and diet aids may also contain caffeine.
· Notes for Professionals: Amiodarone is an inhibitor of CYP1A2 isoenzymes, and could theoretically reduce CYP1A2-mediated caffeine metabolism. The clinical significance of this potential interaction is not known.

Cannabis
· Severity: Major
· Notes for Consumers: Discuss cannabis use with your care team. The effects of cannabis may be altered if used with your medication. Call emergency services right away if you experience slow or shallow breathing, shortness of breath, feeling faint, dizziness, confusion, or trouble staying awake.
· Notes for Professionals: Advise patients to avoid cannabis use during amiodarone treatment. Concomitant use may alter the exposure of some cannabinoids and increase the risk for adverse reactions. The cannabinoid delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) are a CYP2C9 substrates and amiodarone is a CYP2C9 inhibitor.

Grapefruit juice
· Severity: Major
· Notes for Consumers: Do not drink grapefruit juice or eat grapefruit while taking this medication. Grapefruit may alter the effects of your medication. Serious side effects may occur. Contact your care team right away if you experience new or worsening side effects.
· Notes for Professionals: Advise patients to avoid grapefruit and grapefruit juice during amiodarone treatment due to the risk of increased amiodarone exposure and adverse reactions. Amiodarone is a CYP3A substrate and grapefruit juice is a CYP3A inhibitor.
