Alcohol

Caffeine-containing Foods/Beverages
· Severity: Moderate
· Notes for Consumers: Limit excessive caffeine intake (examples: coffee, teas, colas, chocolate and some herbal supplements) while taking Modafinil. Also avoid medicines containing additional Caffeine whenever possible. Taking a high amount of Caffeine can increase the risk of nausea, nervousness, palpitations, problems with sleep, rapid heartbeat, or other side effects.
· Notes for Professionals: Caffeine is a CNS-stimulant and such actions are expected to be additive when coadministered with other CNS stimulants or psychostimulants.

Food
· Severity: Moderate
· Notes for Consumers: You can take Modafinil with or without most foods. However, Grapefruit-juice and grapefruit may increase the actions or side effects of Modafinil. Do not significantly alter your intake of grapefruit juice while on Modafinil, as increasing grapefruit intake may lead to irritability or nervousness.
· Notes for Professionals: Food delays the rate, but not the extent, of modafinil absorption by approximately one hour. A delayed onset of action of a modafinil dose may result from this interaction, but this may not be clinically significant to the patient. Patients may take modafinil with or without food.

Grapefruit juice
· Severity: Moderate
· Notes for Consumers: You can take Modafinil with or without most foods. However, Grapefruit-juice and Grapefruit may increase the actions or side effects of Modafinil, which may cause headache, nausea and vomiting, nervousness, difficulty sleeping or other side effects. Do not significantly alter your intake of Grapefruit juice while on Modafinil.
· Notes for Professionals: Grapefruit juice has been reported to decrease the metabolism of drugs that are metabolized via the CYP3A4 isoenzyme; grapefruit juice inhibits CYP3A4 in enterocytes. Because modafinil is significantly metabolized through CYP3A4, patients should be advised to not significantly alter their grapefruit juice ingestion.
