ISOPROTERENOL/Isuprel (eye soe proe TER e nole) treats heart conditions such as slow heartbeat and heart block. It works by helping your heart beat stronger, making it easier for your heart to pump blood to the rest of the body.  It may also be used to treat trouble breathing or wheezing (bronchospasm). It works by opening the airways of the lungs, making it easier to breathe.

Caffeine-containing Foods/Beverages

· Severity: Moderate

· Notes for Consumers: Limit excessive Caffeine intake (examples: coffee, teas, colas, chocolate and some herbal supplements) while taking Isoproterenol and avoid medicines containing additional Caffeine whenever possible. Taking a high amount of Caffeine with Isoproterenol can increase the risk of nausea, nervousness, palpitations, problems with sleep, rapid heartbeat, or other side effects.

· Notes for Professionals: Caffeine is a CNS-stimulant and such actions are expected to be additive when coadministered with other CNS stimulants or psychostimulants.

Foods containing theobromine

· Severity: Moderate

· Notes for Consumers: Side effects from Isoproterenol may get worse if you take excessive amounts of foods containing caffeine-like compounds, like coffees, teas, colas or chocolate. You may need to limit caffeine intake while taking this medication. Promptly report side effects of Isoproterenol to your health care provider such as headache, nervousness, difficulty sleeping, or palpitations. If you are receiving Intravenous Isoproterenol, your health care provider will closely monitor the effects of this drug which is only given in a hospital or emergency setting.

· Notes for Professionals: The combination of isoproterenol and theobromine, which is found in food like chocolate or teas, or aminophylline could potentially increase cardiac adverse reactions such as cardiac arrhythmias.
