ATENOLOL (Generic for TENORMIN) Lifestyle Interactions

Atenolol 25mg, Oral tablet

Food

· Severity: Moderate

· Notes for Consumers: Atenolol may be taken without regard to most food or meals. There is one small study that suggests taking atenolol with orange juice directly might moderately lower atenolol's effectiveness. More data are needed to confirm these results. Why this interaction might occur is not known at this time. Until more data are available, it may be advisable to not significantly alter your orange juice intake while taking atenolol.

· Notes for Professionals: Coadministration of oral atenolol with most foods/meals does not appear to be a problem despite a 20% reduction in bioavailability. Administration directly with orange juice might have a moderately significant effect by decreasing bioavailability and mean Cmax by roughly 40%. Data are from a small single dose study in healthy volunteers. It is not known if this potential interaction results in clinically significant effects on heart rate or blood pressure reduction in populations of interest.
