Ritonavir 100mg, Oral tablet
Cannabis
· Severity: Major
· Notes for Consumers: Discuss cannabis use with your care team. The effects of cannabis may be altered if used with your medication. Call emergency services right away if you experience slow or shallow breathing, shortness of breath, feeling faint, dizziness, confusion, or trouble staying awake.
· Notes for Professionals: Advise patients to avoid cannabis use during protease inhibitor treatment. Concomitant use may alter the exposure of some cannabinoids and increase the risk for adverse reactions. The cannabinoids delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) are CYP3A substrates and protease inhibitors are strong CYP3A inhibitors. Concomitant use of a cannabinoid product containing THC and CBD at an approximate 1:1 ratio with another strong CYP3A inhibitor increased THC, 11-OH-THC, and CBD peak exposures by 1.3-, 3-, and 1.9-fold respectively.
Ritonavir 100mg, Oral tablet
Grapefruit juice
· Severity: Moderate
· Notes for Consumers: Although an interaction is possible, these drugs may be given with grapefruit juice. If given with grapefruit juice, you may experience more side effects. If you notice any new or unusual side effects, notify your health care provider immediately. You will be closely monitored.
· Notes for Professionals: Concurrent administration of ritonavir with grapefruit juice may result in elevated ritonavir concentrations. Grapefruit juice is an inhibitor of the hepatic isoenzymes CYP3A4 and CYP2D6, and an inhibitor of the drug transporter P-glycoprotein (P-gp). Ritonavir is metabolized by both enzymes and is a substrate for P-gp. Caution and close monitoring are advised if these drugs are administered together.
